MGM Watershed Alliance - A Wise Use of Resources

MiamiRiver.jpgThe Middle Great Miami Watershed Alliance promotes the wisest use of our land and water resources for the present and for future generations.

As a sponsoring agency of the Alliance, Miami County Extension works diligently with other community government and service professionals to promote awareness, educate and inform the people who live and work in the watershed on the many issues related to water quality in our area.

What is a Watershed?

A simple definition of a watershed is an area of land that catches rain and snow and drains or seeps into a marsh, stream river, lake or groundwater.

What and where is the Middle Great Miami Watershed?

The Middle Great Miami (MGM) Watershed encompasses sections of Shelby, Miami and Champaign counties.

There are more than 20 major streams that flow through this watershed and hundreds of smaller streams.  All of these streams drain into the Great Miami River.

What issues affect the watershed?

Some of the issues affecting the Middle Great Miami Watershed are:

  • Changes to the shape of the stream channel
  • Damage to the stream bank and vegetation
  • Flooding in an near urban areas
  • Polluted urban runoff
  • Improperly planned development
  • Poorly functioning septic systems
  • Agricultural effects due to livestock and crop production

The Middle Great Miami Watershed Alliance meets once at month at the OSU Extension service meeting room on the third Thursday of each month.  Meeting times will be posted on the Miami County Extension calendar.
